UW Women's Basketball Notebook: Huskies Stink It Up at Home
Week of January 27-February 2: Washington looks to rebound against Indiana, Ohio State
Overall Record: 13-7
Big 10 Record: 4-4
Net Ranking: 55
Last Week’s Recap
The Huskies were out-muscled, out-schemed, and out-hustled all over the court in a 85-61 loss to Iowa at home this week. The Hawkeyes, missing their best post in Hannah Stuelke, established dominance early by posting Addison O’Grady. Once Iowa owned the paint, they started finding shooters outside the arc as the Hawkeyes went 8-for-8 from three in the first half. Lucy Olsen was particularly effective and finished the game with 20 points and six assists.
Player of the Week
With apologies to Brenna McDonald (who brought physicality and toughness that others lacked), Elle Ladine put up 24 points while playing 38 minutes against Iowa. Even when the Huskies trailed by as much as 30, Ladine remained aggressive.
Stat of the Week
Iowa shot 71.7% from the field against the Dawgs.
Bonus stat: Sayvia Sellers had zero points with 7:42 left in the fourth quarter when the Huskies were already down 35 points.
This Coming Week
Washington hosts Indiana on Monday, January 27th at 6:00 pm (Big 10 network).
All of a sudden, this feels like a must win game for the Huskies’ tournament chances. Indiana is facing a three game losing streak and will come into Alaska Airlines Arena with a desperation that reeks of Iowa. That didn’t go so well for the Dawgs last time. And the Hoosiers are good. Indiana is a balanced scoring attack with six players averaging 9.2 points or more on the season. Just don’t let Yarden Garzon get hot from deep as she shoots 37% from 3.
Washington travels to #12 Ohio State on Sunday, February 2nd at 2:00 pm (Big 10 network).
This game will be an immense challenge for the Huskies. The Ohio State Buckeyes are 18-1 on the season and average 82.9 points per game (2nd in Big 10 behind USC). They feature five players who average double digits in scoring, led by Cotie McMahon (16.5 points per game). The Schottenenstein Center will be rocking as the midwest knows how to support women’s basketball.
